    DVD recording 101 Entry level,
    February 26, 2005

By&nbsp,Rich Seattle, WA See all my reviews

happy that I got to archive my old home VHS to DVD with great results.

    Great features:

This is an excellent entry level DVD recorder. The TV Guide feature is the reason to past over Panasonic cheaper brother the E55s which just have the VCR plus feature. TV Guide is a simpler and free variant to TiVo. It has an on screen menu of the channels as well as title, time, information and the choice to record. Sadly, TV Guide feature only work for antenna broadcasting and basic cable. Digital cable and satellite users may have to invest more money into a TiVo recording device lack of part input here.

The recording quality is great, which is nearly the same or lesser then the original, but never better. I move old VHS home video to this device and it was easy with excellent quality. Recording TV programs through the antenna is simple, but the quality depends on your reception. DVD r is more common then DVD+r. I use XP or SP mode 1 2hrs for VCR move, and LP or EP mode 4 8hrs for TV program.

This is one of the most intelligence video devices I have own still. There are so many choice and setting to configure base on your needs. The SD card reader is a nice extra for this device. I have a Panasonic digital camera with a SD card so it’s just plug and play. The manual is easy to follow and understand to figure this complex device.

    The have not:

As an entry level recorder could mean this device have less of the advance input features. There aren’t part inputs which mean you can not recorder from higher quality image. No DVfirewire input for newer digital camcorder. No hardrive for mix and match recording. The recorder is a 4 stars but the DVD playback is a 3.75 stars. The progressive scan has many of settings to customize from, but my Toshisba’s DVD is a little smoother. The basic DVD playback feature is just basic and restricted. The old Toshiba has many features as zoom, slow forward, display length of the DVD, which I have still figure/found. Slow boot time, but that’s true to most recorders.

Panasonic quality is great. I have a Panasonic’s HDTV for nearly a year, a digital camera and they all are working good with great results. I like Panasonic’s pricing which is producing great quality for the price, but they leave out many of the more cool features and style that Sony has that will jack up the prices. I use Verbatim’s Digital Movie DVD r at 4x and Panasonic’s DVD RAM, anything faster like 8x doesn’t seem to work.

For the price and the not so technology enabled person, this is a great peice of equipment. It was easy to set up and use. The only thing that can be a problem is the sd slot. I used this to see a slide show of my pics from my digital camera. The picture quality wasn’t the best, but then this was only to review and edit my pics. Putting them on a disc, the picture quality is great. I’m happy with this product.

  • Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 channel digital surround decoding and output for use with matched AV receivers and speaker systems
  • Sony DVP-NC875V/S 5-Disc DVD/CD/SACD Changer, Silver Description:
Video and audio buffs rejoice: Sony’s 5 disc, DVP NC875V/S changer handles all your DVD, CD, and Super Audio CD SACD needs including playback of MP3 music and JPEG image CDs. The player gives you all the convenience of a carousel changer continuous playback, play exchange as well as progressive scan video outputs with Precision theater Progressive technology and cool improvements like Sony’s Precision Drive three system for playing damaged discs. The DVP NC875V/S plays just about any disc out there, from DVD Video to DVD R, DVD RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. And if your living room is now home to an HDTV or you are just thinking of “someday,” the DVP NC875V/S stands prepared to deliver the full possible of your DVDs through Sony’s Precision theater Progressive de interlacer scanning with 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, called 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a regular DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper pictures while eliminating almost all motion artifacts. Precision theater Progressive technology uses a 12 bit video DAC digital to analog converter with high bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player’s picture more faithful to the source whether film or video because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to manage different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are used to procedure the moving and still parts of a picture, ensuing in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames per second movies to 30 fps video, 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant info to display a film frame accurate picture. Composite and S video outputs bring compatibility with almost any TV. Based on the disc, SACD music releases supply super high fidelity multichannel or stereo sound. As an anti piracy measure, the DVP NC875V/S performs own decoding of SACD signals, passing high resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. That means you will need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog audio inputs to appreciate multichannel SACD releases. Fitted SACD bass management helps you tailor the output level of the “.1″ LFE low frequency effects channel to your system, as an proper level may differ from the output level proper for Dolby Digital and DTS surround combinations. If you are not planning to use the SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 channel surround sound signals may also be routed through the player’s digital audio outputs 1 each RCA coaxial and Toslink optical for simpler connection to a matched receiver multichannel analog and digital audio interconnects aren’t supplied. Precision Drive three gives a system for reading DVDs that are in less than perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback caused by imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. Once you hook up the DVD player, a special fast Setup screen appears prepared to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Afterward, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for an remarkable 40 discs. Other playback features are 10 second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display with related discs, a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ equalization, custom parental control memory for 40 discs, also as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes. What’s in the Box
DVD player, remote control, two AA remote batteries, a stereo analog audio/composite video interconnect, a user’s manual, and warranty info.

This is a good DVD player. But it has an extra feature which makes it special: also to DVDs and regular CDs, it plays the new SACDs which are the finest sounding recordings now available.

When regular CDs became available they displaced LPs in the marketplace because of their small size and the fact that their sound didn’t degrade with the ticks and pops that the best maintained LPs sooner or later get. But, in spite of these benefits also as important enhancements in CD sound over time with technological advances like oversampling many connoisseurs maintained that CDs never achieved the warmth and high frequency sweetness feature of top grade audiophile LPs. Now that changed. Super Audio CDs are superior in sound to the finest audiophile quality LPs I have ever heard. Also, regular CDs played on a SACD player sound better than they do on common CD players. In fact, the best regular CDs in my collection equal audiophile quality LPs in sound when played on a SACD player and the new SACDs sound better. If you are going to purchase a DVD player, why not get one like which also plays not only regular CDs but the new terrific sounding SACDs particularly, when the price is so reasonable?

This is an excellent DVD player, the best of the five set tops I have owned so far.

Several of the reviewers present incorrect info about the player’s potential. 1st, it DOES support MP3 tags, my MP3 disks and I make many of them show the names of the tracks. One could wish for MORE of the text to be displayed, but if one enters the data properly, the track can information can be read. In any event, this is usually only an issue with classical tracks, where, e.G., one may have a track title like “Concerti for Two Mandolins, Strings, Orchestra, RV231, Allegro.” With rock, pop, jazz tracks this is not really an issue. The player, unlike ever other one I have owned, lets tracks to be scanned which are not being played.

Second, the player’s front panel display easily read from a distance of of eight to ten feet.

The picture quality is stunning with the new generation DVDs. The 1st seasons of HBO’s “Deadwood” looks totally stunning. Since I make legal archive copies of all my DVDs for clearly reasons! I can positively affirm that it supports all available formats except Panasonic’s proprietary RAM naturally. It handles over half a dozen different brands of DVD R & RW with no problem. I may also confirm that it has little trouble with scratched and damaged disks provided my five year has not done a number on them!. While not 5 year old proof and PC burners have trouble with that! it does deliver from moderately degraded disks.

We can dismiss the old nonsense about LPs sounding “better” than LPs right here and now. This was never true. I have listened to LPs in pristine conditions on $1,000+ record players and the lowest end CD player is far superior to any LP/record player mix. Asserting the reverse is indulging in nostalgia to the point of brain damage. I will trade the clearness and lack of analogue fuzz and distortion over the fictional “warmth” of LPs.

Red Book CD playback is excellent. But where it really shines is with MP3s, particularly with 320 kpbs the highest quality MP3 possible. It also handles CBR and VBR MP3s. The sound is totally stunning, far superior to Red Book cds, let alone the century old, cranky, crackly, popping archaic LPs. This player with also display album covers if they are in jpeg form. And MPS shuffle complete IS possible with this player. Again, READING the directions will save one grief AND embarassment.

Although the technical description claims this player isn’t “THX certified” I’m watching “Return of the Jedi” as I write this it plays the THX is smart clearness.

This player has so many functions that I have still to play with all of them. The “Quick Set up” lets one to get going nearly now. But it’ll take you a good while to explore all its potential.

It also has one remaining function I have not seen on any other set top. Though my surround sound receiver does not have a DTS decoder, this player lets me to hear DTS tracks any way. An excellent and totally unexpected bonus.

I have still to attempt the SACD capability, mainly because there’s little music in which I am interested that was ported to this format.

Bottom line: a great player, with great features at an excellent price point. Ignore the ridiculous complaints from many reviewers and certainly think about this set top.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

I bought this in November. It used to freeze occaisionally if the buttons were pressed too quickly on the remote. The unit has now died. Any DVD put into the tray causes the player to hang. It wont power off. To get the DVD back out, I have to cycle the power via the wall socket, then hit eject.

Sony support’s response: Mail it to a fix depot, they will fix it and mail it back. This may be inconvenient, and given the very low quality of the player itself not worth the postage.

Looking at other reviews, it’s clear this is a extensive issue. That Sony will not admit the issue or offer to exchange it out boggles my mind . The worst buyer service I have experienced.

Added comment 8/16/2005. Buyer service gave me a refund which usually covered shipping for fix. Sony’s Loredo Exchange center indicated they discontinued the model and dont have equivalent unit to send me and offered to forward it for fix it or purchase the unit back. I just received a check for the unit.

I am not sure where all the angst came from in the negative reviews here. I have had this long enough to know that we got a good unit. The major reason I am posting a review is to make a couple of comments about the upscaling capability of this unit. 1st off, the upscaling logic won’t make a lousy DVD look as good as your favorites. The good news is that it does supply quite some improvement on many discs and you do not have to have the best TV monitor to see the improvement. Before replacing our 11+ year old Toshiba 32″ TV, we had lots of time to verify this assert. We also had two other DVD players to compare to, both decent players by Panasonic and Pioneer, both without upsampling capability. One improvement you’ll notice is important softening of sound features. DVDs that I classify as “bad” frequently display increased image distortion as the subjects inside the frame move faster. The upsampling capability tends to make these artifacts less obvious.

Another comment about video quality I have asked myself and heard others ask if HDMI cables are worth the money. Our TV has HDMI inputs also as part video inputs. There’s no doubt that the HDMI input gives for better picture quality. Because this DVD player has both HDMI and part outputs, it is easy enough to switch the TV input to compare. And if you shop around, you may be able to now get HDMI cables at a more reasonable price than you could some months ago. I have compared $250 Audioquest cables to $60 AR cables using this DVD player and a 1080i standard monitor and am hard pressed to say that I can see any difference. But, the Audioquest cable does seem to keep a good connection longer than the AR. Costly HDMI cables are more supple and seem to manage being bent around in the cable quagmire much better than cheaper ones.

This is a awful unit and should be recalled. I bought this thinking it could be a good, versitile product and suited for future use. What a mistake. I began having disc freezes and tray locks after about five weeks. Sproradic at 1st, then worse and worse. Now after three months it’s dead and the official Sony warranty IS INVALID !!! I have to pay $33 to get a replacment unit from Texas, which can be a refurbished one with the same problems. Hard to believe is not it!? Go to the Sony support site and see for yourself. You do not have to have one, no need for a serial number or anything. Just go through the procedure of acting like you have a problem. The support procedure will end saying your unit isn’t qualified for local service ! and your only choice is to return it, freight pre paid, plus another $33 to get a substitute, which may/may not be new. Do a web search on the other poor comsumers who bought this part of junk and you will see it’s a extensive problem. I trashed this dead Sony unit after only three months. Why pay $33+ for more garbage? I’ll purchase a JVC or Panasonic, maybe Denon. I will never purchase from Sony again. The JVC XVN512 is looking pretty good and has comparable features.
